Year-Round Growth Needs a Pruning Plan

Tree trimming and pruning in Honolulu works against a growing season that never really stops. With mild temperatures all year, monkeypods, mangoes, banyans and shower trees keep putting on new wood, and a canopy that cleared the roof two years ago can be resting on it today. Good pruning removes the right branches, not the most branches: dead wood, limbs rubbing on the house, crossing or crowded growth, and weight at the ends of long limbs. Done on a regular cycle, it costs less than the cleanup that follows a branch failure.

Pruning to the standard

We prune to ANSI A300, the national standard for tree care. In practice that means cutting just outside the branch collar, removing no more than about a quarter of the live crown in one visit, and taking out dead branches two inches and larger. It also means refusing two habits that are common in the islands: topping, which cuts large limbs back to stubs, and lion's-tailing, which strips the inside of the canopy and leaves foliage only at the tips. Both produce fast sprouts that are weakly attached and break in ordinary winds.

Common Honolulu trees and what they need

Monkeypods spread wide and low, so the usual work is lifting and lightening limbs over roofs, lanais and driveways. Mango and other fruit trees respond well to reduction that keeps fruit within reach and limbs off the neighbor's roof. Banyans send down aerial roots and grow massive limbs, and they need regular weight reduction and clearance from structures. Shower trees and royal poincianas grow quickly and can have brittle wood; thinning helps wind pass through. On every tree we watch for co-dominant trunks, two stems of equal size splitting from one point, because they break more often in storms.

Wet valleys and dry lowlands

A tree in Mānoa, where rain falls almost daily, grows faster and needs more frequent work than the same species near the coast, where the airport averages about 16 inches of rain a year. In wetter areas we watch for decay and fungus; in drier ones, for drought stress and dieback. That difference is one reason we look at each tree before recommending a pruning cycle.

Street trees and exceptional trees

Branches from a city street tree over your yard are tempting to cut, but the city's street tree rules make it unlawful to prune a tree in the planting strip without a Parks and Recreation permit. Trees on the Register of Exceptional Trees need an approved permit, with a qualified arborist form, before crown or root pruning. We check before we cut.

What Is Included

Pruning is matched to the tree and the problem it is causing.

Crown thinning

Selected interior and crowded branches removed so wind passes through, without stripping the canopy.

Crown reduction

Long, heavy limbs shortened to lateral branches to cut weight and spread.

Roof and wall clearance

Limbs lifted or cut back from roofs, gutters, lanais, carports and rock walls.

Deadwood removal

Dead and broken branches taken out before they fall.

Fruit tree pruning

Mango, lychee, avocado and breadfruit kept to a manageable height and spread.

Young tree structural pruning

Training young trees to one strong leader so they avoid co-dominant splits later.

How the Job Goes

1. Walk the tree

We look at structure, dead wood, clearance problems and anything over the house, the street or the neighbor's yard.

2. Agree on goals

Roof clearance, lighter limbs before storm season, fruit within reach or a view kept open: the quote lists exactly which cuts will be made.

3. Prune

A climber makes the cuts, lowering limbs on ropes over roofs, lanais and walls.

4. Cleanup

Branches are chipped or hauled covered, and the yard is raked and blown clear.

Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions

How often should trees be trimmed in Honolulu?

Many fast-growing shade and fruit trees need attention every one to three years here, because growth continues year-round. Trees in wet valleys usually need it more often than the same species near the coast. Palms are on their own schedule, usually twice a year for coconuts.

What is the best time of year to prune trees in Honolulu?

Most trees can be pruned any time of year here. The useful timing is getting heavy limbs reduced before the June-to-November hurricane season and before winter Kona storms, and pruning fruit trees after harvest so you don't cut off next season's flowers.

Can I cut branches from my neighbor's tree that hang over my yard?

Generally you can trim branches on your side of the property line, but you should not damage the tree's health, and it is wise to talk with your neighbor first. If the tree is a city street tree, pruning it without a permit is unlawful. We can quote the work and make cuts at proper points rather than at the fence line.

Is topping a tree ever a good idea?

No. Topping is considered a prohibited practice under national pruning standards. It leaves large wounds that decay and forces quick sprouts that are weakly attached and break easily. Reduction pruning shortens a tree properly.
