Taking Trees Down Where Houses Sit Close Together
Tree removal on a Honolulu lot almost never means felling a tree in one piece. Houses stand a few feet apart, rock walls and carports line the property edges, and a service drop often runs right through the canopy. So most removals come down in sections: a climber takes off limbs from the top, heavy pieces are lowered on ropes, and the trunk is cut into rounds small enough to carry down steps or along a side yard. Height matters, but access, slope and what sits underneath usually set the time and the price.
Trees that usually need to come out
Some cases are clear: a dead tree, a trunk split by wind, a fresh lean with soil heaved up on one side, or decay and fungus at the base. Others are judgment calls, like a healthy mango whose limbs reach over the neighbor's roof or a banyan whose roots are lifting a driveway. We tell you what we see and whether pruning could solve the problem instead of removal.
Albizia
Albizia is an invasive tree in Hawaiʻi, and it grows startlingly fast: recorded heights of about 52 feet after three years and 108 feet after nine. After Lala in August 2026, albizia was named among the trees that failed most, with shallow roots and brittle branches that can drop without warning. A volunteer albizia at the back of a valley lot is far easier and cheaper to remove at 20 feet than at 70. Large ones near houses are taken apart limb by limb, never felled toward anything that matters.
Trees near lines, streets and neighbors
We do not cut within 10 feet of energized lines. Hawaiian Electric can de-energize and lower a home's service line on request, and we schedule the removal around that. If a tree stands in the planting strip by the curb, it may be a city street tree that cannot be removed without a Department of Parks and Recreation permit; we flag that before quoting. Trees on the city's Register of Exceptional Trees are a separate case, and we check the register if a tree is old, rare or historic.
What happens to the wood
You choose whether logs are cut into rounds and left, or hauled away, and whether chips stay for mulch. Because Oʻahu is designated as infested by coconut rhinoceros beetle, the state restricts how green waste, mulch and palm stumps move on the island and requires material to be covered or enclosed in transport. Hauled material goes covered to an approved green waste site. The stump is its own line on the quote, and grinding can follow the same day or later.
What We Handle
Removal includes the tree itself and everything that comes off it.
Sectional removal
Limbs and trunk sections taken off from the top and lowered on ropes over roofs, lanais and walls.
Albizia and invasive trees
Fast-growing albizia and other weedy trees removed before they get tall enough to threaten the house.
Dead and storm-split trees
Trees killed by drought, decay or wind, taken down before the wood gets more brittle.
Wood and chip handling
Logs left in rounds or hauled, chips left for mulch or taken away covered.
Removal near service lines
Work scheduled after Hawaiian Electric lowers or de-energizes the line to the house.

Ranges from Homeyou's Honolulu guide (October 2026), LawnStarter's Honolulu averages and This Old House (2026). Steep lots, trees over roofs, line work and long carries raise the price. Your written estimate is the price.
The Process
1. Site visit
We look at the tree, what lies under it, the service line, the slope and the path out, and check whether it could be a street or exceptional tree.
2. Quote in writing
You get the method, the cleanup, the stump option and the price in writing, for each tree.
3. Line and permit steps
If the service line needs lowering, you or we call Hawaiian Electric to schedule it before the work day.
4. Removal
The tree comes down in sections, with heavy pieces lowered on ropes and the ground protected where equipment or wood lands.
5. Final cleanup
Brush is chipped, wood is cut or hauled as agreed, and green waste leaves covered.

Why Choose Us for Tree Removal
Sections, not guesses
Each cut is planned so pieces swing away from roofs and walls instead of dropping on them.
An honest second opinion
If pruning would fix the problem, we say so before quoting a removal.
Tree Removal Questions
Can I remove a tree in my Honolulu yard without a permit?
The city's rules focus on two kinds of trees. Street trees in the planting strip by the curb need a permit from the Department of Parks and Recreation, and trees on the Register of Exceptional Trees are protected by city ordinance. If you are unsure, the Division of Urban Forestry at (808) 971-7151 can tell you.
Why is albizia removal so expensive?
Large albizia are tall, grow fast, and have brittle limbs that can break unpredictably, so they are usually taken down piece by piece with rigging. Many grow on steep valley edges where access is hard. Removing them while they are still small costs far less.
Does homeowners insurance pay for tree removal?
Often only when a tree falls on a covered structure because of a covered event such as a windstorm, and then usually just for the part needed to clear and repair the damage. A healthy tree removed as a precaution is generally not covered. Check your policy and keep photos.
Do you remove the stump too?
Only if you want it. Stump grinding is a separate line on the quote, and it can be done the same day as the removal or later. Palm stumps should not be left to rot, because rotting palm material is where coconut rhinoceros beetles breed.
