Trees as Old as the Neighborhood

Pearl City's population went from 19,552 in 1970 to 42,575 in 1980, according to census figures on Wikipedia. That boom shaped the Tree Service work we do in Pearl City today. The shower trees, mangoes, Chinese banyans and palms set out in front of new homes in that decade are now big, mature trees, and on a typical suburban lot many of them are too close to the house, the driveway or the wall.

What fifty-year-old yard trees need

A tree that has been growing for five decades has usually had a few rounds of rough pruning along the way. Old topping cuts sprout clusters of fast, weakly attached shoots. Limbs that were never thinned get long and heavy at the tips. Roots lift sidewalks and crack driveways. Most of our Pearl City visits start with a walk around the tree to sort out what is structural, what is cosmetic, and what can wait. Reduction cuts to healthy side branches, following ANSI A300 practice, usually do more good than taking a big bite out of the top.

Removal comes up when a tree is dead, has serious decay, or is simply in the wrong place. A Chinese banyan two feet from a foundation is a common example. When a removal is the right call, we take the tree down in pieces where space is tight and grind the stump afterward if you want the area replanted.

The beetle that arrived next door

The coconut rhinoceros beetle was first trapped on Oahu in December 2013 on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, and by 2015 it had been found on the Pearl City Peninsula, according to the CRB Response program. The beetle bores into the crown of coconut palms and leaves V-shaped cuts in the fronds as they open. If your palm's fronds look notched like that, take photos and report it. The beetles breed in mulch, compost and green waste, so we keep palm debris moving off site rather than stockpiling it in the yard.

A busy, owner-occupied suburb

Census QuickFacts counts about 14,963 households in Pearl City, with a 71.5% owner-occupancy rate and 26.9% of residents 65 or older, one of the higher shares among the communities we serve. A lot of the calls come from long-time owners who want the job done once and done right, with the yard left clean.

Hillside streets above the highway

Not all of Pearl City is flat. Neighborhoods such as Pacific Palisades and Momilani climb the slopes mauka of the highway, and the lots there tend to be steeper, windier and harder to reach with a truck. A removal on one of those streets may mean carrying wood up to the road by hand or lowering it down a slope on rope. We walk the access route during the estimate, so the written price already accounts for it.

Pearl City Questions

Roots from my tree are cracking the driveway. Can you cut them?

Sometimes. Cutting large structural roots close to the trunk can make a tree unstable, so we look at which roots are involved before recommending root pruning. If the tree is too close to the slab to fix safely, removal and stump grinding may be the better long-term answer.

How do I tell if my coconut palm has rhinoceros beetle damage?

Look for fronds with V-shaped cuts, like someone took scissors to them, and for holes at the base of fronds in the crown. Report suspected damage to the CRB Response program. We can clean the palm and check the crown when we are up there.

Do you work on the Pearl City Peninsula and in Pacific Palisades?

Yes, both. Palisades lots sit higher up and often have slopes and windier exposure, while the peninsula is flat and near the water.
