Old Trees in the Mill Town

Waipahu was built around a sugar mill. Oahu Sugar Company was incorporated in 1897 and put its mill here, and plantation operations ran until after the 1995 harvest. That long history is why Tree Service in Waipahu often means dealing with very old trees: mangoes, monkeypods, breadfruit and palms planted by families who have been on the same land for generations.

What old plantation-era trees need

Trees that have stood for many decades usually carry some decay. Old pruning cuts that never sealed, cavities where limbs broke off, and termite or fungus damage at the base are common. That does not mean the tree has to go. A careful inspection tells us how much sound wood is left. Often the right move is a reduction that takes weight off the longest limbs, plus removal of deadwood, so the tree can keep shading the yard. Where decay is too far along, we take the tree down in sections and grind the stump.

Big households, busy yards

Census QuickFacts reports an average of 4.27 people per household in Waipahu, the highest of any community we cover, and an owner-occupancy rate of 59.7%. Yards are full of cars, sheds, laundry lines and garden plots. We stage jobs to avoid all of that, and we talk with whoever will be home that day about where people and cars need to be. If you rent, ask the owner before scheduling, since most tree work is the owner's call.

Streams and low ground

Waipahu sits on the north shore of Middle Loch and West Loch, and Waikele and Kapakahi streams run through town. Waikele Stream feeds Pouhala Marsh, a wildlife sanctuary for endangered native birds. There is about 140 feet of elevation change between the north side of town along H-1 and the water. Trees on low, wet ground near the streams root shallowly and can topple after heavy rain, while those on the higher, drier blocks deal more with drought stress. The yard you are in makes a difference.

Typical Waipahu jobs

  • Reducing big mango and monkeypod limbs over roofs and neighbors' lots
  • Cleaning coconut palms and removing dead ones before they fall
  • Removing trees damaged by termites or rot at the base
  • Clearing branches off the service line to the house
  • Stump grinding so a garden or parking pad can go in

History you can visit

Across from the old mill site, Hawaii Plantation Village opened on September 20, 1992, as a living history museum on land bought by the city and state in 1973. Waikele Stream runs along it. It is a good reminder of how many of Waipahu's yards started as plantation camp lots, small and crowded, with fruit trees planted for food.

Tree Removal in Honolulu, HI

Waipahu Questions

My grandparents planted this mango. Can it be saved?

Often, yes. Old mangoes respond well to careful reduction and deadwood removal. We check the trunk and main limbs for decay first. If the base is hollow or badly rotted, we will be honest that it is time to remove it.

I rent in Waipahu. Can I hire you to trim the tree?

We need the owner's okay before working on any tree. Many landlords are glad to approve it if you send photos and our written estimate.

How do you get equipment into a crowded yard?

Smaller jobs are done by hand with ropes and carried out. For bigger ones, we plan where the truck and chipper can sit, and you may need to move cars for a few hours.

Is a tree near the stream more likely to fall?

Trees in low, saturated ground have shallower roots and can tip in heavy rain and wind. Signs to watch are a new lean, cracked or heaved soil at the base, and exposed roots.

Can you remove a dead coconut palm next to my house?

Yes. Dead palms are removed from the top down in short sections so nothing falls on the roof. Grinding the stump afterward matters too, because rotting palm stumps are breeding sites for the coconut rhinoceros beetle.
