Palms First, Then Everything Else

In Ewa Beach, a lot of Tree Service starts with coconut palms. The town sits along Mamala Bay on Oahu's leeward side, and palms line the beach lots and the older streets inland. They are also the trees most at risk here. When the coconut rhinoceros beetle was first found on Oahu in December 2013 at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, the next detections in 2014 included Ewa Beach and Iroquois Point, according to the CRB Response program.

The beetle tunnels into the crown of a palm to feed on growing tissue. As damaged fronds unfold, they show clean V-shaped cuts, and a palm hit repeatedly can die. Adult beetles breed in decaying plant material: mulch piles, compost, green waste and dead palm stumps. If you have palms, the most useful things you can do are to keep the crown clean, remove dead palms and stumps promptly, and avoid bringing in mulch from unknown sources. We take palm debris off site the same day, and we can grind out old palm stumps so they do not become beetle nurseries.

Wind is the other constant. A sensor at Puuloa recorded a 70-knot gust when Tropical Storm Lala passed in August 2026, according to the National Weather Service summary. Most days are nothing like that, but the steady trade winds and salt air off the bay still shape coastal trees. Salt burn shows up as brown leaf edges on the windward side, and limbs grow heavier on the sheltered side. Thinning and reducing the long side keeps the tree balanced and less likely to break in a gust.

Lots are tight. Census QuickFacts shows the Ewa Beach CDP with only 1.19 square miles of land and an average of 4.20 people per household, among the highest on the island. Small yards, multi-generation households, and several cars in the driveway mean we plan staging carefully: where the chipper goes, where the wood comes down, and how to keep the street open for neighbors.

The area has deep farming roots. Hawaiians settled the Ewa Plain at least by the 12th century, and the Ewa plantation began operating in the 1890s under W.R. Lowrie. On the older streets, some yard trees may date back to the early town years. Big mango, tamarind and monkeypod trees near homes deserve a careful look for decay before anyone decides to take them down.

Hurricane season is the time to get ahead of it. Coconuts and loose fronds become projectiles in a strong blow, and a palm loaded with nuts catches more wind. If a palm or a spreading tree near the house has not been cleaned in a year or more, early summer is a good time to schedule it, before the Central Pacific hurricane season reaches its late-summer peak. A clean, balanced crown will not make a tree storm-proof, but it removes the loose material most likely to hit a window or a car.

Note that the Ewa Beach CDP is the older coastal town. Ocean Pointe, Ewa Gentry, Iroquois Point and the Ewa Villages share the 96706 ZIP code but are counted separately by the census. We work in all of them.

Ewa Beach Questions

My coconut palm has V-shaped cuts in the fronds. What should I do?

That is the classic sign of coconut rhinoceros beetle feeding. Photograph it and report it to the CRB Response program. Keep the crown clean and remove any rotting palm material in the yard. We can clean the tree and grind out dead palm stumps.

How often should coconuts be removed?

Palms near walkways, parking or play areas should have nuts and dead fronds removed at least once a year. Heavy producers may need it twice.

Can you work on a small lot with cars in the driveway?

Yes. We will ask you to move vehicles out of the drop zone on the day, and plan where the chipper and truck can sit without blocking the street.
