Country Lots, Shoreline Ground
Kahaluu sits along the windward shore north of Ahuimanu and south of Waiahole, at an elevation of just 7 feet. Wikipedia describes it as a mostly rural area becoming a denser residential community, and that mix is what Tree Service in Kahaluu looks like: some homes on standard lots, others on larger country parcels with fruit trees, palms, bananas and overgrown edges that have not been cleared in years.
Low ground near the water
About 1.04 square miles of the Kahaluu CDP is water, and much of the land is low and close to the bay. Trees rooted in low, wet ground tend to have shallow root systems. In a storm with heavy rain and strong wind, those trees are more likely to tip over at the roots than to snap. Signs of a problem include a new lean, soil heaving on one side of the trunk, roots lifting out of the ground, and standing water that stays around the base for days. On lots like these we stage equipment carefully so we do not rut the ground.
Larger parcels
On country properties, the biggest job is often clearing. Edges grow in with invasive trees and brush, palms and bananas multiply, and old fruit trees get tall and tangled. We start by walking the property with you to mark the trees worth keeping, then remove the rest in a sequence that keeps the work area safe. Brush gets chipped, and large wood can be left for firewood, cut into rounds, or hauled away, depending on what you want.
Owners and family land
Census QuickFacts shows a 59.6% owner-occupancy rate and a median owner-occupied value of $1,213,400 in Kahaluu, with an average of 3.45 people per household. Some families have held land here a long time. The area has its own history; the Hygienic Store, a local landmark, was the largest dairy in Hawaii in the early 1900s.
After Lala
The National Weather Service summary for Tropical Storm Lala notes that Oahu's heaviest rain fell mostly on the windward side, and Kahekili Highway, just south of here, was closed by a mudslide and downed trees. A storm like that can loosen roots and crack limbs without bringing a tree down. If a large tree near your house or driveway took a beating, have it checked before the winter rains.
Typical Kahaluu jobs
- Clearing overgrown edges and invasive trees on larger lots
- Removing trees leaning after wet weather
- Coconut palm cleaning and dead palm removal
- Banana clump thinning and cleanup
- Pruning old fruit trees back to a manageable size
- Stump grinding where access allows
Moving green waste
The coconut rhinoceros beetle breeds in mulch, compost and green waste, and moving that material is one of the ways it has spread on Oahu. On our jobs, debris is chipped and hauled to an approved green waste site unless you want to keep chips on the property. Avoid bringing in mulch or compost from unknown sources.

Kahaluu Questions
Can you clear an overgrown acre and keep the good fruit trees?
Yes. We flag what you want to keep before cutting, then clear around those trees. Selective clearing takes more care but saves trees that would take years to replace.
Do bananas count as tree work?
Technically bananas are giant herbs, not trees, but clumps can get big and messy. We thin them, cut out old stalks and clean up along with the rest of the job.
Is the wood worth keeping for firewood or smoking meat?
Some is. Fruitwoods like guava and mango are popular for smoking. Tell us before the job and we will cut and stack what you want to keep.
How long does a clearing job take on a country lot?
It depends on the size of the area and how much is being kept. A small edge can be done in a day. Larger parcels may take several days, and some owners split the work into phases to spread out the cost.
