Three Kinds of Hawaii Kai Lots

Hawaii Kai was dredged and filled out of Kuapa Pond starting around 1959. In 1961, Kaiser-Aetna leased the roughly 521-acre fishpond from the Bishop Estate to turn it into housing tracts with a marina and channels. Neighborhoods have since spread back into the valleys and up the ridges. That history is why Tree Service in Hawaii Kai depends so much on where your house sits.

Around the marina

Low ground around the marina was built up with fill. Trees planted on filled, compacted land with a high water table often root shallowly and spread sideways, which makes them more prone to tipping in saturated ground and more likely to lift driveways and seawalls. Salt spray burns the windward side of the canopy. Waterfront trees and palms also overhang docks, boats and neighbors' yards, so every limb that comes down has to be controlled. We rig and lower over water and structures rather than dropping.

Valley floors

Kalama Valley and the other valleys behind the marina have homes on flatter ground near the valley floor and steeper lots toward the walls. Trees along the valley edges, many of them invasive, grow toward the light and lean over back fences. Hawaiian Electric reported in May 2024 that a fallen albizia had knocked out power to parts of Hawaii Kai and that its transmission corridors along the base of the Koolau were heavily overgrown with albizia. HECO handles its corridors, but many private lots in East Honolulu back up to the same kind of growth. Albizia grows very fast and drops limbs without much warning. When one can reach a house, we usually recommend taking it out.

Ridge homes

Kamehame Ridge, between Kalama and Kamilo Iki valleys, was developed in the 1990s with high-value homes from its base to its top. Ridge lots get the full force of the trades, and trees there need thinning to let wind pass through and reduction of the longest limbs over the house. Slopes make removals slower: pieces are lowered on ropes, and wood may need to be carried up to the street.

Who lives here

Hawaii Kai is mostly single-family and relatively high-priced, with about 30,000 residents in the 2009-2013 survey period. Owners care about views, and a common request is to thin or reduce trees to open a view without killing or disfiguring them. We do that with careful reduction cuts and crown thinning to ANSI A300 standards, not by topping, which leaves an ugly, weak tree that grows back denser than before.

Common Hawaii Kai jobs

  • View pruning and crown thinning on ridge homes
  • Palm cleaning on marina and waterfront properties
  • Removing trees damaging seawalls, walls or driveways
  • Clearing branches off the service drop to the house
  • Stump grinding after removals

Hawaii Kai Questions

Can you thin my tree to open up the ocean view without killing it?

Usually. Selective crown thinning and reduction can open sight lines while keeping the tree healthy. Some trees need two visits to get there safely. We do not top trees for views.

Is there a rule against cutting trees near the marina?

Work near the water can involve association rules and, for anything beyond tree work, shoreline or permit rules. Ordinary pruning and removal on your lot is usually fine. We will flag anything that looks like it needs a check.

A huge albizia is behind my back fence. Whose is it?

It depends on the parcel lines. If it is on your lot, we can remove it. If it is on neighboring or state land, contact the owner with photos. We can help you find out where it stands.

My palm overhangs my neighbor's dock. Can you clean it?

Yes. We remove nuts and dead fronds by hand and lower them, so nothing lands on the dock, the boat or the water.
