A Small Place With Settled Yards
Waipio covers only about 1.2 square miles of land south of Mililani Town and east of Waikele, reached from the H-2 or Kamehameha Highway. Tree Service in Waipio tends to be for households that have been in place a long time. Census QuickFacts shows that about a quarter of residents are 65 or older and households average just 2.61 people, the smallest in Central Oahu. Many of the people who call us are retirees or couples whose kids have moved out, looking after a yard they planted themselves.
What that means for the trees. In a neighborhood that has had time to settle, trees are past the young stage. Fruit trees have grown tall enough that the fruit is out of reach. Shade trees have spread over the roof. Palms have gotten too tall to clean with a pole. Hedges that were once waist-high now block windows. We get a lot of requests to bring things back into proportion: lowering a mango or lychee after harvest, thinning a shower tree so light reaches the lawn again, and cleaning palms.
Ladders and older homeowners. If you used to do your own pruning and have stopped, you are not alone. Falls from ladders and roofs are a real risk with tree work, and a pole saw overhead is hard on shoulders and necks. We handle the climbing and the cutting, haul everything away, and can set up a schedule so the work happens every year or two instead of waiting for something to break.
Crestview. Crestview is the named neighborhood within the Waipio CDP. Its streets climb a little higher than the flats near the highways, and some yards back onto slopes. Trees at the top of a slope or at the edge of a gully need a look at the roots and soil as well as the branches, especially after a heavy rain. A tree that has started to lean, or has soil cracks on one side of the trunk, should be checked before the next storm.
Central Oahu weather and pests. Waipio sits between the drier Pearl Harbor side and the higher, breezier plateau around Mililani. The coconut rhinoceros beetle reached nearby south Mililani in 2018, according to the CRB Response program, and Kunia, to the west, in 2017. Palm owners should watch for V-shaped cuts in new fronds and report them. Keep dead palm material out of compost piles, and avoid bringing in unknown mulch.

Waipio Questions
Can you set up a regular trimming schedule for my yard?
Yes. Many Waipio owners have us come back every year or two for the same trees. We keep notes from each visit, so the next one starts where the last one ended.
How tall can you safely lower my lychee tree?
It depends on the tree's structure. Usually we can bring it down meaningfully over one or two visits without removing so much that it stops fruiting. Pruning right after harvest gives the best results.
Do you clean up everything afterward?
Yes. Brush is chipped, wood is hauled away unless you want to keep it, and the yard is raked. The estimate spells out cleanup so there are no surprises.
My palm is too tall to clean with a pole anymore. What are the options?
We climb palms with a rope and harness rather than spikes, so the trunk is not wounded, or use a lift where the yard allows it. Nuts, flowers and dead fronds come off, and the healthy green fronds stay on so the palm is not over-pruned.
