The Right Age for Structural Pruning

Ground was broken for Mililani Mauka on April 6, 1990, and the first owners moved in during 1992. So most yard trees in the neighborhood are thirty years old or younger, and that makes Tree Service in Mililani Mauka different from older towns. The trees are past the sapling stage but not yet huge, which is exactly when structural pruning pays off.

Why young trees are worth the attention

A tree in its second or third decade is choosing its final shape. If two trunks are competing for the lead, or a limb is growing at a tight angle with bark pinched in the joint, that is the time to fix it, with a few small cuts. Wait another twenty years and the same problem becomes a big limb over the roof, a split trunk in a windstorm, or a removal. We look for codominant stems, crossing branches, weak unions and limbs heading toward the house, and correct them in a way that keeps the tree's natural form.

Height and wind

The neighborhood sits at about 880 feet on the mauka side of H-2, higher and often breezier than the towns along Pearl Harbor. Trees on open corner lots and along the greenways take the trade winds directly. A crown that is too dense acts like a sail, so selective thinning helps. Topping, on the other hand, makes things worse: it triggers a flush of weak sprouts that break more easily.

Greenways and ants

Mililani Mauka's gullies and greenways run between rows of homes. In June 2014, a resident on Auina Street found little fire ants, and the state Department of Agriculture later mapped a six-acre infestation on homes on both sides of a greenway. Officials treated the area every six weeks and later reported that surveys were no longer finding the ants. The episode is a good reason to inspect potted plants and green waste before moving them, and to report any tiny, slow-moving ants that sting. If our crew sees anything suspicious while working, we stop and tell you.

A young community

Census QuickFacts shows only 11.3% of Mililani Mauka residents are 65 or older, and the median owner-occupied value is $988,100. Many households are busy families. The jobs that come up most are structural pruning on front-yard trees, clearing branches from roofs and solar panels, palm cleaning, and occasionally removing a tree that was planted too close to the house.

Planting the right tree

When a tree has to come out, many owners ask what to plant in its place. On a small lot, a tree that stays under about 25 feet at maturity, planted well clear of the house, the driveway and the service line, will save a lot of trouble. We are happy to talk through options when we are on site, and we leave room in the grinding so a new tree can go in close to the old spot if you want it there.

Association rules

Most Mililani Mauka homes belong to a community association, and front-yard changes may need approval. Ask us for a written scope if your board wants one.

Mililani Mauka Questions

My front-yard tree is only 25 years old. Does it really need pruning?

That is the best age for it. Fixing a weak branch union or a competing leader now takes a few small cuts. Leaving it means a much bigger and more expensive problem later.

Branches are shading my solar panels. Can you fix that without hurting the tree?

Usually. We reduce the limbs that cast the shade back to healthy side branches instead of hacking the whole side off. Some trees need a couple of visits to get there.

What should I do if I think I have little fire ants?

Do not move plants or green waste off the property. Follow the state's sampling instructions and report it. We will not haul material from a yard with a suspected infestation until it has been checked.
