The Wettest Neighborhood in Town
Manoa is a whole valley, running from Manoa Falls at the inland end down to King Street, about three miles east of downtown. The climate station at Lyon Arboretum, at the head of the valley, averages about 150.96 inches of rain a year over 282 rainy days, and Wikipedia notes the valley gets almost daily rain, even in the dry season. Rainfall drops off toward the mouth of the valley near the university, but even there it is far wetter than Waikiki. That makes Tree Service in Manoa its own specialty.
What constant rain does to trees
Trees in upper Manoa grow fast and stay wet. Wood that is always damp is heavier and more likely to decay at old wounds. Fungus fruiting bodies, soft spots in the bark, and cavities at old pruning cuts are common findings. Roots in waterlogged soil are shallower and weaker than roots in well-drained ground. Put those together and you get the kind of tree that holds up well for years and then drops a big limb, or tips over, after a week of rain and a gusty night.
The answer is regular attention: thinning dense crowns so they dry out and shed wind, reducing long, heavy limbs over roofs, and checking the base and root zone for decay. We follow ANSI A300 pruning practice and avoid flush cuts and topping, which make decay worse.
Old houses, old trees
Manoa is largely private houses built before the 1960s, along with low-rise condominiums; newer housing climbed onto the steeper Diamond Head side of the valley. Lots from that era often have very large trees close to the house, such as monkeypods, mangoes, avocados and royal palms planted generations ago. Many are worth keeping. Some have reached a size where a single limb could crush a roof.
Manoa Stream
Manoa Stream starts at the base of Manoa Falls and runs through the valley to join Palolo Stream and flow into the Ala Wai Canal. On October 30, 2004, it overflowed and caused millions of dollars in damage to homes and university buildings. During Tropical Storm Lala in August 2026, forecasters reported record streamflow on Manoa Stream. Trees along the stream banks are undercut by these floods and can fall into the channel, where they make flooding worse. If you own streamside property, keep an eye on bank trees after any big rain.
Typical Manoa jobs
- Crown thinning and reduction on large old trees over homes
- Decay inspections and removal of failing trees
- Clearing branches off roofs, which stay wet and grow moss under dense shade
- Storm cleanup after heavy rain and wind
- Pruning trees along stream banks
- Stump grinding on accessible lots
Exceptional trees
Some of Manoa's big trees may be on the county's exceptional tree register. Those need an approved permit before any crown or root pruning. Ask us and we will check before starting.

Manoa Questions
My roof stays wet and mossy under a big tree. What can be done?
Thinning the crown lets more sun and air reach the roof. Reducing limbs directly over it helps more. In upper Manoa's climate, a roof under dense shade will never fully dry out, so some reduction is usually worth it.
Is there a dry season in Manoa for pruning?
Not really in the upper valley. We schedule around the day's weather instead, since climbing in steady rain is unsafe.
A tree on the stream bank behind my house is leaning. Should I worry?
Stream bank trees can be undercut by floods. A lean toward the stream, exposed roots or cracked soil on the bank side are warning signs. Have it looked at before the next big storm.
Do you work in upper Manoa near the arboretum?
Yes. Narrow roads and steep driveways in upper Manoa mean we sometimes use smaller equipment and carry wood out by hand.
Can a tree that fell into Manoa Stream be left there?
A tree in the channel can catch debris and push floodwater toward homes, so it should be dealt with. If the stream section is not on your property, report it to the city. If it is yours, work in a stream can need permits beyond ordinary tree work, so check before cutting in the channel itself.
