Specimen Trees, Careful Work

Kahala is a flat neighborhood of about 1,200 homes on the east side of Diamond Head, known for luxury real estate and beachfront properties. The Tree Service we do in Kahala leans toward precision work: keeping big specimen trees and coconut palms healthy and attractive, protecting expensive hardscape and landscaping during the job, and removing trees without leaving a mark on the property.

Coconut country, once. Wikipedia's account of the neighborhood notes there used to be more greenery in Kahala because of the many coconut trees, and that a mango grove stood where Kahala School is now. Forests in the area were cleared during World War I, and after the war, farms closed and ponds were filled for large homes. After World War II the area was subdivided as Waialae-Kahala. Some of the palms and shade trees on today's lots likely date from those postwar decades and are now very large.

Beachfront palms. On the makai side, coconut palms are part of the look of the neighborhood. They also drop nuts and heavy fronds onto lanai, pool decks and walkways. Palms near people should be cleaned at least once a year, and some heavy producers twice. We climb palms without spikes so the trunks are not scarred, and we remove nuts, flower stalks and dead fronds while leaving the healthy green crown intact. Over-pruned palms with only a few fronds left are weaker, not stronger.

Watch new fronds for clean V-shaped cuts, a sign of coconut rhinoceros beetle, which has spread across Oahu since its 2013 arrival. Report suspected damage, and keep palm debris from piling up on the property.

Salt and wind. Trees on beachfront lots take salt spray and steady wind. The windward side of the canopy shows browned leaf edges, and growth piles up on the sheltered side, making the tree lopsided. Balanced thinning and reduction of the heavy side keep it stable. On estate lots with lawns, gardens and pavers, we protect the ground with mats, keep equipment on hard surfaces, and plan the drop zone around sculpture, lighting and irrigation.

Leasehold to fee. Until the 1980s, most Kahala homeowners leased their land from the Bishop Estate, and by 1986 they could buy it outright. For tree work, the practical point is that most owners now control the trees on their own parcels. Trees in the street right-of-way are still the city's, and any tree on the county's exceptional tree register needs a permit before crown or root pruning.

Hurricane prep for big lots. Hurricanes are rare near Honolulu, and the last one on record was Iniki in 1992, but tropical storms like Lala in August 2026 still bring down trees across the city. On a large Kahala lot, the biggest risks are usually a few heavy-limbed shade trees close to the house and palms full of nuts near the pool or lanai. A visit in early summer to clean palms, remove deadwood and reduce the longest limbs over the roof is the practical way to prepare.

Kahala Questions

How do you protect lawns and pavers during a removal?

We lay ground protection mats, keep heavy equipment on driveways and hard surfaces, and lower wood by rope instead of dropping it. The plan for access and protection is part of the written estimate.

Can my palms be cleaned without climbing spikes?

Yes. We do not use spikes on palms that are staying. Spike holes are permanent wounds in a palm trunk.

The salt wind has made my tree lopsided. Can it be fixed?

Usually it can be improved. Thinning and reducing the heavy, sheltered side over a visit or two brings the tree back into better balance.

Do you work with landscapers and property managers?

Yes. Many Kahala homes have a landscaper or estate manager. We can coordinate the date, access and cleanup with them and send the written estimate to whoever approves the work.
