Small Yards, Growing Trees

Ewa Gentry is a housing development on the leeward Ewa Plain, set inland on the west side of Fort Weaver Road about 12 miles from Honolulu. The Tree Service work we do in Ewa Gentry is shaped by its newness and its density. Most homes are on modest lots, the subdivision landscaping went in within living memory, and the trees are reaching the size where they start to crowd roofs, fences and each other.

From cane to cul-de-sacs. Sugar cane is no longer grown on the Ewa Plain, but it was the reason anyone lived here a century ago, with the Ewa Mill setting up residential villages for workers. The census counted 4,939 people in the Ewa Gentry CDP in 2000 and 25,707 in 2020, a sign of how fast this part of the plain built out. Soil that was farmed for decades and then graded for housing often gives trees a shallow, sideways root system. That makes trees more prone to tipping in saturated soil and more likely to lift sidewalks and driveways.

Young families. Census QuickFacts shows that only about 10.6% of Ewa Gentry residents are 65 or older, the lowest share among the communities we serve, and the owner-occupancy rate is 78.5%. Busy households usually call us for practical jobs:

  • Trimming a tree that is rubbing the roof or gutter
  • Raising the canopy so cars, trucks and people can get under it
  • Cleaning palms so coconuts and fronds do not fall on the driveway
  • Taking out a tree that was planted too close to the house
  • Grinding the stump so the spot can be replanted or turned into lawn

Pruning young trees properly. The best time to correct a tree's structure is while it is young. A few well-placed cuts can remove a competing leader or a branch with a weak, narrow crotch before it becomes a problem. We prune to ANSI A300 standards and do not top trees. Topping leaves stubs that sprout dense, weakly attached shoots, and the tree ends up more dangerous than before.

Watch the palms. Coconut rhinoceros beetle has been in the Ewa area since 2014, when the CRB Response program found it at Ewa Beach and Iroquois Point. Clean crowns, prompt removal of dead palms and no unknown mulch are the basics. Our crews take palm debris off site rather than leaving it in a pile.

Storm season. The Ewa Plain is flat and open, so trade winds and the occasional tropical storm blow across it with little to slow them down. When Tropical Storm Lala passed in August 2026, the National Weather Service logged a 70-knot gust at the Puuloa sensor on this side of the island. A young tree with a dense crown, staked too long or rooted shallowly, can lean or snap in that kind of wind. Thinning the crown a little and checking old stakes and ties is cheap insurance.

Associations and neighbors. Many Ewa Gentry streets fall under a community association, so check the rules before taking out a front-yard tree. Shared fences are common on small lots, and branches often cross them. We can talk with you about trimming back to the property line in a way that does not harm the tree.

Ewa Gentry Questions

My neighbor's tree hangs over my fence. Can you trim it?

In general you may trim branches back to the property line, but you should not damage the tree or go onto the neighbor's land without permission. Talking with the neighbor first usually leads to a better result for the tree and the fence.

How big a tree can go in a small Ewa Gentry yard?

Choose something that stays modest at maturity and plant it well away from the house, the driveway and the service line. Big shade trees on small lots almost always end up needing heavy pruning or removal.

Do you work in Ocean Pointe and Ewa Villages as well?

Yes. We cover all the 96706 neighborhoods, including Ocean Pointe, Ewa Villages, Iroquois Point and the older Ewa Beach town.

What happens to the branches and logs after the job?

Unless you ask to keep wood chips, we chip the brush and haul it and the logs away the same day. Your city green cart is for leaves and small clippings, not the volume a tree job produces, so cleanup is written into the estimate.
